An interactive journey through toy history

This project began with a fundamental question: How can a traditional museum visit evolve into an immersive and engaging adventure? At the Toy Museum, we embraced this challenge by blending nostalgia with modern interactive design, creating an experience that invites curiosity, play, and learning.

From the outset, our aim was to craft an environment where visitors of all ages could engage deeply with the collection, while preserving the authentic charm and physical interaction that characterizes the museum’s heritage. By integrating gamification, interactive installations, and accessible digital information, we designed a journey that is both personal and dynamic.

Visitors become active participants from the moment they enter, engaging with a layered narrative that bridges the physical and digital worlds. The result is an experience where storytelling, exploration, and play converge, creating lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the world of toys.

Enhancing the museum experience

From the moment visitors step inside, they are invited to become players in an overarching game. Each visitor receives a personal RFID bracelet, which they use to scan at various digital poles throughout the museum. These posts not only provide information but also unlock interactive games and track progress, encouraging exploration and participation.

Visitors start by personalizing an avatar, creating a personalized experience that follows them throughout their journey. This gamification element motivates visitors to actively engage with each exhibit, earn points, and discover new layers of interaction.

Bridging physical and digital gameplay

One of the core challenges was enhancing the traditional, analog toy experience without overshadowing it. The solution? A series of interactive games that seamlessly blend physical and digital elements, encouraging playing and learning in equal measure.

These interactive setups enhance the tactile experience while introducing modern, engaging layers of play.

Accessible knowledge and information

To complement the interactive experience, digital screens were installed alongside physical displays. These screens offer detailed information about the extensive toy collection while ensuring the physical heritage pieces remain safely preserved behind glass. Visitors can dive deeper into the stories behind the toys, enriching their understanding of the historical context and craftsmanship.

Additionally, visitors can explore a digital version of the museum's hidden collection, providing insights into pieces not physically on display. This ensures that every part of the museum’s rich heritage is accessible and discoverable.

An engaging and accessible way for both young and old to discover and learn.

Listening to Industry Voices

In a dedicated room, visitors encounter a wall of "talking heads". Which are digital screens featuring interviews with toy industry experts and makers. Each station is equipped with a headphone, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in authentic stories about toy creation, industry evolution, and cultural impact.

These screens create a personal and reflective experience, adding depth and context to the broader exhibition.

The Toy Museum's new interactive experience is a prime example of how technology can enhance cultural storytelling. By blending gamification, interactive installations, and accessible information, we managed to redefine what a museum experience can be. The result is a journey that is not only informative but also engaging, playful, and memorable for visitors of all ages.
